The holidays can be a stressful time. So many people feel overwhelmed just thinking about all the money they spend during the season and the running around they to do to make everything perfect. If you’re tired of feeling that way, you might consider a greener, more minimalist holiday for your family.
“Keeping Up” with everyone else (or with what you used to do in the past) can put you in a panic, especially with inflation and supply chain problems. It’s the perfect time to make a change that will positively impact our wallets, stress levels and our environment. Three areas we can make some simple changes are: Decorations, Gatherings, and Gift Giving.
Decorations
Since seasonal decorations are stored in boxes for most of the year, we tend to forget what we have. Before you purchase anything new, take inventory. What do you have and what do you really use? Instead of storing decorations that aren’t your style or you
don’t really use, plan a swap with friends and family. Anything that’s left over should go to donation. This way, everyone can get something that’s “new”.
Gatherings
Parties with large groups of people tend to use a lot of disposable items, like paper plates and plastic cups. Plan smaller, more intimate gatherings this holiday season. Not only will you get a chance to enjoy your company, but with less guests you could get out
the real plates and silverware, to reduce the amount of disposable items you’re adding to a landfill.
Gifts
Too many gifts for little ones is overwhelming, and the more toys they have, the less they actually play with- they may even prefer the box! One thing we can do to reduce stress and keep our finances in check, is limit the number of gifts we are buying. The 4 Gift Rule might be an option for your family- giving something they want, need, wear, and read.
The best gifts we can give don’t come in a box- it’s time together. Consider gifting experiences, instead of items. The memories created will outlast most toys.
The Best Gifts
Lastly, in the season of giving, if your children are old enough, teach them how to declutter and donate the toys and clothing they no longer need. Gifting unneeded items to others helps us appreciate what we have.
Making a few changes in your traditions could start the new year for you and your family with wonderful memories, less clutter, and fewer bills to pay off in January.
